Anyway, that photo shows how robust the airframe really is on the P-38. She took one hell of a beating but appears to still be mostly intact, minus the obvious damage in the photo.

It also looks practically factory fresh. Strip the engines and guns and make beer cans out of the rest.

I think that it got the damage by landing with the landing gear up. The propellers have some blades intact so they weren’t turning when it landed. Maybe you cannot manually crank those down in a P38 and the engines were disabled by the AA?

That was my initial suspicion, too; however, this is what happens to the prop tips when a plane lands gear-up. If anything, I’m suspecting it was damaged during a strafing run (an air raid, as it were).
